Happy Birthday National Guard - Always ready, always there - 385 years. You read that right. The National Guard is 385 years old! It was established as part of the English colonial militia. It marked the beginning of an organized militia, which spread to every colony—eventually to states and territories—and today forms the military reserve in the form of the Army and Air National Guard.
We wish the National Guard a very happy birthday on December 13, as the oldest units were formed on this day in 1636.

If you read our post on the Army's birthday, you may be a little confused as the reserve component of the Army was created before the Army itself. The reason for this is simply a technique. The Militia Act of 1792 allowed previously established militia units to retain their usual privileges, including dates of formation.

The US National Guard is a unique and important branch of the military. National Guard members typically work a civilian job while maintaining military training, part time. This means that they are always ready to serve or protect our nation.
The National Guard can respond to domestic emergencies and participate in overseas combat missions, counter-narcotics, reconstruction missions and more. Each state has special National Guard units that are mobilized as needed by the president or governor of the state in which they are located.
Like other military holidays and recognition days, National Defense Day is not a public holiday. But that does not mean that it is not possible to recognize and honor the national guard on his birthday, just like that.
Some Guard units celebrate locally with open houses, recruiting efforts or philanthropy. In addition, memorial events are often held on this day for those who lost their lives as a result of their service.
