The cost has always been in blood and great sacrifice. As guardians of America's freedom, the United States Marines are considered among the most powerful warriors in the world.
Since 1775, Marines have marched bravely to the sound of guns and have fought hard and honorably to defeat the scourge of violence and terror. We're Marines - that's what we do.

In the famous 1921 Marine Corps Birthday Message—a message read each year during Marine Corps birthday celebrations held around the world—Major General John A. Lejeune, Commandant of the Marine Corps, said:

In every war and struggle since the beginning of the Army, the Marine has distinguished himself with the greatest honor, receiving new honors each time until the word "Marine" has come to denote all that he excelled in military achievement and martial arts. This high reputation of distinction and military reputation we who are Marines today have inherited from our predecessors in the organization. With it, we have also received from them the eternal spirit that has animated our teams for generations and that has been the hallmark of Marines throughout the ages. So long as that spirit continues to flourish, the Navy will see equally to every emergency in the future as it has done in the past, and our countrymen will regard us as worthy successors to the line of a long line of distinguished men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the creation of the corps.
